J.Ferm Presents at Business First New Economy Series
Jessika Ferm was recently chosen to speak at the Columbus Business First New Economy series on the topic of leadership. Her interactive presentation covered four key ways leaders need to adapt to the changing times, including becoming more transparent, creative, up-to-date and able to follow. “Old models of leadership are falling aside to make way for new ways of thinking,” said Jessika. “The old autocratic ‘do what I tell you’ style of leadership doesn’t work with up-and-coming Generation X and Y workers. Leaders today must be part of a team and inspire respect, not demand it.” Jessika’s published column outlining these four aspects of leadership is available here. She will also be teaching a half-day workshop on Friday, June 11, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. For more details, please contact J.Ferm at info@jferm.com or +1-614-441-8972.

No Frills No Fluff® Lawyer’s Edition Launches in Conjunction with the Columbus Bar Association
J.Ferm has launched a special edition of the No Frills No Fluff® Management Skills Program specifically for lawyers, and will be offering the workshop to the Columbus Bar Association starting in August, 2010. This specialized program was completed after an extensive research initiative that identified management pain points unique to lawyers and law firms. Designed and facilitated by attorneys, the Lawyer’s Edition provides junior, mid-level and senior attorneys with the tools to achieve the same standard of excellence in managing their legal practices as they have when practicing law.
The program differs from the traditional Management Skills Program in that it is focused specifically on legal practices, including self and time management, non-legal communication, delegation/collaboration, relationship management, business development and managing conflict outside of the courtroom. The highly interactive sessions draw upon the rich experience of the group through carefully framed idea exchanges, brainstorming sessions and exercises. Participants develop and hone an action-focused plan for leveraging the course concepts and techniques to achieve measureable results within the firm. More information is available here, or by contacting info@nofrillsnofluff.com or +1-614-441-8972. Additional information will be posted at the Columbus Bar Assocation website shortly. At the end of the four month program American Municipal Power CEO Marc Gerken presented certificates and congratulated the group of eight. More information on the No Frills No Fluff® program is posted at www.nofrillsnofluff.com.

J.Ferm is known for producing innovative and results-focused retreats and the new ballroom-inspired leadership-follower retreat is no exception. Jessika, President of J.Ferm, an amateur competing ballroom dancer, realized that learning to follow and to execute a flawless routine is as much about effective leading as it is about exceptional following. Also, ballroom dancing is a ton of fun! The retreat incorporates leadership-followership concepts into basic ballroom techniques. It is taught by a J.Ferm Master Facilitator and a Certified Professional Ballroom Instructor. The retreat includes pre-work such as self-assessments and requires post work to ensure that the strategies taught are implemented effectively. The “lawyer’s edition” is currently in the research and development phase and is set to launch in the fall of 2008. J.Ferm makes first annual community donation to English at Large to fund a one-year conversation group
In 2006, J.Ferm became familiar with English at Large, a provider of free English and basic literacy instruction to adults throughout the Boston area. Marlana Patton, the organization's Executive Director is passionate about serving the non-English speaking community so that adults can perform everyday tasks like reading a bus schedule, signing forms, and helping their children with homework. According to English at Large statistics, 93 million adults in the US (almost half the adult population) demonstrate only basic English literacy skills and 11 million adults with below basic skills are considered non-literate in English. At English at Large, the waiting list is 250 person long with an average wait time of 17 months.
These statistics hit close to home for Jessika Ferm, Principal of J.Ferm, an immigrant and non-native English speaker. Though she speaks English fluently, she can relate to the challenges of living and operating in a foreign country.
"I remember arriving in Boston 14 years ago with two suitcases and instructions to get on a Bonanza bus that was supposed to take me to Providence, RI. I looked for signs to buy bus tickets but the logic I would use in my country to find such signs did not translate to the US. My ATM card didn't work, I had no cash in US currency and the bus driver did not accept credit cards. Once in line, I asked two people if I could borrow a few dollars each for my bus ticket without the ability to pay them back and they were kind enough to help me. I can't imagine how I would have made it to Providence without basic English skills."
"As soon as I connected with Marlana and English at Large, I knew it was time to 'pay it forward' as we say. I decided to start an annual community donation program, where each year, J.Ferm picks a non-profit agency with positive grassroots approaches to building the community. This year, J.Ferm donated $750 to English at Large so that they can continue the important work they do to help non-English speakers become involved, active, and powerful contributing forces in our economy and communities. I can't think of a better cause in which to invest."
For a grassroots organization like English at Large, smaller corporate donations make a big difference. For example:
$1,000 provides one-to-one tutoring services for a single adult for one year.
$750 covers the cost of a single conversation group for one year.
$500 allows the organization to match 10 new learners with 10 new volunteer tutors.
If you would like to support English at Large, please contact Marlana Patton at 781-395-2374 or via email at
mpatton@englishatlarge.org.

J.Ferm Highlighted in Boston Business Journal

“Her
Vision Becomes Reality” Jessika and J.Ferm profiled in
Swedish newspaper…
In the November
issue of the Swedish newspaper “Boras Tidning”
Jessika M. Ferm was profiled in the article “Her Vision
Becomes Reality.” It highlights the vision Jessika had
as an 11-year old girl living in a small urban town in Sweden.
At that time, the reporter asked what she envisioned her life
to look like when she was thirty. With a unwavering conviction
she answered “When I am thirty, I don’t live in
Sweden anymore. I work for myself and I have a good education…”
Today, as the principal of J.Ferm, her vision is realized.
Remember, “Life
isn't’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating
ourselves.” --Unknown |
